When did stand-ups start doing THIS with the mic?
Amy Matthews is at the Edinburgh Fringe performing her show Commute With The Foxes at Monkey Barrel at The Tron at 3pm. Here she shares what she can't get enough of at the festival, her most embarrassing Edinburgh experience and the worst thing about the Fringe. Apart from the cost of accommodation, obviously…
Edinburgh Binge
There's always a lovely moment, after I've done my show, sat in Barrel Bar deciding what shows I want to see, drink in hand and surrounded by pals. That's the best festival feeling I think. It's all the best bits of it distilled into a fleeting moment of peace and excitement.
Edinburgh Cringe
My contact lens fell out just before a show and my depth perception was completely shot to bits. I kicked a glass over on my walk to the stage and felt like my sight was zooming in and out for the entire show.
I never drink before a gig or show but I felt drunk. I have no idea what I looked like and have no desire to ever find out. I reckon I looked like Mad-Eye Moody.
Edinburgh Whinge
When did stand-ups start holding the mic in a pinch at the base of the wire, positioned closer to one's belly button than one's mouth? It looks like they only found out what hands are for that morning.
I know techs absolutely hate it because it ruins all their levels - they have to hoick them right up so that the comic balancing the mic on their fingertips picks up their voice, and even then it feels like they're more likely going to amplify the sound of their stomach digesting lunch.
I'm not suggesting pushing it right up into our mush - we're not hype men in a garage song - but something that doesn't look like we're allergic to sound would be great.
