Michael McIntyre at Headliners

Note: This review is from 2003

Though a relative newcomer, McIntyre has quickly acquired the ability to build up an easy rapport with his audience, chatting amiably but confidently to get his material across.

That skill, though, may have been learned at the expense of anything hugely exciting by way of originality.

His set is fairly straightforward, insubstantial stuff - the old 'men vs women' chestnut, the daily irritants of a relationship and 'what if the Speaking Clock woman had sex'. It's the sort of observational humour that garner laughs of recognition - and plenty of punters digging their partners in the ribs as they identify their foibles - despite offering little insight.

It is, however, exceedingly well done - which is no small achievement. Everyone can certainly relate to these topics, and he gets some amusing angles out of them.

But McIntryre's set is really the comedy equivalent of a Marks and Spencer pullover - inoffensive, with broad appeal and well put-together using durable material, just nothing to get particularly excited about.
