Rick Right – Original Review
Note: This review is from 2008
Review by Steve Bennett
In the spirit of Rick Right’s act – and because it’s so damn easy – this review comes in the form of rewritten song lyrics. So please sing this to the tune of Supergrass’s Alright (the video below might help)...He ain’t young, that sounds mean
And his set, ain’t so clean,
Takes a hit, adds new words
He’s Rick Right
Jokes are weak, he don’t mind
With a song, belted out,
Hides the flaws, in the rhymes
He’s Rick Right
Is he much good?
You can’t be sure,
On the scene, in the clubs,
He is cheap with his laughs…
His gags ain’t young, he gets by,
They’re quite bad, but in tune,
Screws around, at the mike,
Cos he’s Rick Right
Gets his cash, for old rope,
For ‘owt fresh, there’s no hope,
Sit in awe? Not at all,
Cos he’s Rick Right
Is he much good?
You can’t be sure,
On the scene, in the clubs,
He is cheap with his laughs…
But he ain’t young, that sounds mean
And his set, ain’t so clean,
Sees a hit, adds new words
He’s Rick Right
To be fair, despite his lack of originality, Right is probably a better exponent of the easily-rewritten lyric than most – if only because he keeps each tune mercifully brief. Once he gets the gag in, however lame it might me (Shitting On The Dock Of The Bay!), he moves on – which at least adds a vibrancy to his poor material.
When he flips things over to alter the melody rather than the words – One Song To The Tune Of Another style – it is genuinely amusing, even if, again, hardly original. But you can’t argue with Nirvana as a country and western act.
But there are ultimately too many weak jokes in his act that the fig leaf of upbeat music can only partially conceal.
