Supergirly – Original Review
Note: This review is from 2008
Any evening of pop spoofs is always going to have serious limitations. Vacuous pop stars are hardly the toughest of targets, repetitive choruses can only be rewritten to make repetitive jokes and the range of gags is strictly limited. What can you say about Christine Aguilera that you didn't say about Britney Spears?
Really, the only way you stand a chance of overcoming these comedic hurdles is with energy and enthusiasm - and luckily Supergirly have this in spades.
If you're prepared to leave your intellect at the box office, this is unabashed entertainment from the perky, piss-taking princesses of pop.Take it too seriously, though, and you risk thinking Supergirly are The Barron Knights of the MTV generation.
But when you buy a ticket for a couple of spangly Aussie Live and Kicking stalwarts, you know you're not in for anything highbrow. On this level, it's a spirited romp through the latest Now compilation, liberally peppered with enjoyably bitchy comments. It also helps if you knew your A1 from your Another Level - and I'm not ashamed to say that I don't - but it's not vital.
The lively duo have the classic double-act dynamic, last seen with French and Saunders - Louise is the large, over-the-top character whose silly mugging always threatens to steal the show and Jai is the more sensible one, holding it all together. And it's their winning performances that make the most of the distinctly limited premise, creating an undeniably fun night out.
