Simon Gent – Original Review

Note: This review is from 2008

Review by Steve Bennett

Simon Gent has more than a touch of the early Paul Merton about him - and it's not just because they share the same deadpan south London accent.

The slightly surreal approach; the mixture of groanworthy puns and inventive wordplay; and the outwardly apathetic attitude are all reminiscent of Merton in his prime.

The combination proves effective for Gent, too, and his inventive humour frequently hits home.

Some parts of his routine aren't so successful, but that's an occupational hazard of eschrewing the easy route, and doesn't detract from the fact that he's likely to be one too watch.
