Marlon Davis – Original Review

Review by Steve Bennett

'Yeh, yeh, yeh. Wassup ?' Newcomer Marlon Davis has clearly been watching a few too many Def Comedy Jam DVDs, immersing himself in that posturing style of urban American comics.

Thus we have an explosion of ear-piercing noise and vibrant energy – but not a great deal of substance to back it up. His set all about the powerful rhythms of language and the hypnotic repetition he uses to recreate his domineering West Indian mother calling him or shopkeepers who speak like MCs as they go about their job.

Behind the brash loudness, there lies an appealing performer. Not only is Davis is charming, with a winning smile, his passion in acting out all the little scenarios that comprise his set is enviable.

He's wanting for material, certainly, but not for presence.
