Nick Sun – Original Review
Note: This review is from 2004
Nepalese-Australian Sun has an appealing line in deconstructing the ethnic comedy that's so in vogue these days.
His mockery of the comedy formulas available to any non-white stand-up is withering, ruthlessly exposing the laziness of thought that can strike any comic.
His style is grumpily deadpan, exuding the feeling that he really would rather be anywhere than on stage. It's slow, hesitant, shy even; which will appeal to many, even though the obvious downside is that it hardly fires an audience with enthusiasm. But for the short sets he's doing at this nascent stage, it hardly matters.
In quieter rooms, Sun can sometimes lack confidence in his material, though he has no right to. His response is to overly fret about how he is performing, when he'd be better advised to march on.
For, as his new act triumphs prove, there's plenty of promise in the young Sun.
