O'Connell's stage persona is in a similar vein to compatriot Ardal O'Hanlon, the bemused idiot savant, but possibly even more scatterbrained.

The downside of this is that the jokes are appallingly structured. There are lots of ideas bouncing around, but they don't crystallise into a comedy nugget.

When a punchline does come along, it's usually a pun - and of dubious quality to boot.

It's a shame, as he does seem to have something to say. He just needs more jokes to say it with. the forced, inane grin at the end of each line quickly grates, too.
