Though something of a comedy icon in Scotland, MacAulay's considerable talents are often overlooked south of the border, where his profile is distinctly lower.

He has the relaxed confidence of a man who has spent much of his adult life behind the microphone, and now - balding, beared and well-spoken -first impressions are of a warm, avuncular figure.

This, and his measured delivery, provides the perfect bait to lure audiences into his world of childish middle age and wry, astute observations.

He starts slow, letting his natural comedy ability do its work, and it's not long until the room is filled with laughter.

There may be comics with sharper, funnier lines - but MacAulay is the whole package. Few can be immune to his innate wit and charm.
