Review by Steve Bennett

This middle-aged Jewish comedian - and one-time promoter of London's fine Meccano Club - has a set that's as old-fashioned in style as you might expect.

His shtick is the downbeat one-liner, delivered from the point of view of the perennially put-upon, and it's easy to see the comic heritage from which he came.

Because the mild-mannered style is quite familiar, it is also somewhat detached, meaning there's not a strong affinity between performer and audience, so gags live and die purely on their own merits.

And a fair few do fall on very stony ground, as they seem predictable and flat, yet others display a witty invention, delivering punchlines far from what you expect. The balance just needs to be tipped more towards the latter.

He also appears in the guise of ageing Borscht Belt comic Sol Bernstein.
