Hils Barker – Original Review
Note: This review is from 2002
Barker's best material demonstrates a cynical intelligence and keen wit as she lays into marginally political targets with disarmingly astute observations.
Routines about the hypocrisy of Daily Mail letter-writers, for example, avoids the obvious to find some beautifully realised sarcasm, and a gag about refugees in Switzerland is similarly well constructed.
Her amiable manner disguises such barbed comments, even if her delivery isn't particularly consistent from night to night.
Not all of her set matches the top quality of the finest moments, yet she is no slouch in creating new material, which is encouraging in someone with so much promise.
One to watch, definitely.
