Jason Wood – Original Review
Note: This review is from 2002
A hugely talented singer, Wood is a one-man Stars In Their Eyes, complete with his own camp links.
His stunning repertoire of spot-on impressions ranges from divas like Alison Moyet to a fantastically emotive Pavarotti. And, like the ITV show, each hit is greeted with an enthusiastic round of applause - but only after the first line.
It's uplifting, entertaining and jaw-droppingly impressive. The only question is how he fits into today's circuit.
For while Woods is an incredible showman, he's a mediocre comic. There a few decent gags, but generally the bits between the fabulous songs are fairly unexciting.
It's sheer entertainment - more of the old school than the 'alternative' circuit - and while you can't fail to be swept away by his vocals, the comedy is wanting.
There's no doubt he'll be a huge star - but whether he'll be known as a comic, rather than just for his astonishing vocal and stage skills remains to be seen.
