Felix Dexter – Original Review
Note: This review is from 2001
Little more than passable as a stand-up, Dexter is instead an excellent character comic, a talent he uses to great effect in his act.
When he's doing the straight observational stuff, the act is enjoyable, if not particularly memorable, as it treads very close to predictable hack material - though, in fairness, with just enough of a twist to make it interesting.
It's when characters are seemlessly introduced to his stories, though, that the routine lifts up several divisions.
The middle-class lawyer convincing no one but himself that he's still true to his Caribbean roots is a particularly fine creation.
And when these creations meld in with his more personal stories, the result is impressive, as Dexter delivers a quality act that sticks to its distinctive black roots, while being easily accessible to all.
