Lockdown lad!
Russell Howard has become a British hero – by swigging cider live on TV just after 9am
Several fans even jokingly suggested he should be knighted for his approach to the lockdown, after watching him sup from a can of cider during Lorraine Kelly’s s Good Morning Britain show.
One viewer tweeted: ‘Russell Howard sinking a thatchers at 9am on live tv is a good enough excuse for anyone to get ‘em in early doors, hahaha class that.’
Another said: ‘Russell Howard drinking Thatchers at 9am in the morning? True West country treasure’, while a third added: ‘Anyone else notice @russellhoward drinking cider on good morning Britain? I suppose its 12 o'clock somewhere.’
Benidorm singer Asa Elliott called him a ‘lad’, posting: ‘Russell Howard on the cider on Good Morning Britain at 9.15. Proper lockdown breakfast #LockdownLAD #GMB #lorraine'
However some suggested it was an attention-seeking joke – in which case, job done! – playing up to lad culture, butwith the can filled with nothing stronger than orangeade.
While an account called Reluctant Alcoholic took issue with the hero-worship, tweeting: ‘This sort of reaction to Russell Howard drinking at 9am shows what our society is like and its relationship with booze and why people are afraid to stop drinking for fear that they will suddenly appear to be boring or worse appear abnormal in some way.
Howard told viewers he had been forced to miss out on his brother Daniel's stag do this weekend, although his wedding next weekend has now been cancelled. And he later took to Instagram to say his brother had dared him to take the swig:
The comedian was appearing on the programme, with his mum Ninette, to promote Russell Howard's Home Time, his new show made under lockdown, which airs on Tuesday and Thursday nights on Sky One
