'The Egyptian Jon Stewart’ heads to the UK
Egyptian comedian Bassem Youssef is to play a short UK tour.
The doctor turned satirist has been dubbed ‘the Egyptian Jon Stewart’, an anti-Mubarak satirist whose career took off during the Arab Spring, when his online videos led to his own TV show.
He was arrested for his jokes against former president Hosni Mubarak, and when Abdel Fatah al-Sisi took power, he found himself marginalised and his show cancelled. All of which was charted in a Netflix documentary, Tickling Giants, which also showed the stresses his career placed on himself and his family.
In 2013, Youssef was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine, and he has since moved to the US, now living near San Francisco.
He will be playing the London’s Royal Festival Hall on March 9 (Tickets) Birmingham Old Rep on March 10 (Tickets) and Manchester O2 Ritz on March 11 (Tickets)
