Sequel to its 2013 family comedy

The BBC is to adapt David Walliams’s children’s book Gangsta Granny Strikes Again! for TV.

Walliams will play the dad, Mike, in the show with Sheridan Smith as mum Linda.

The cast also includes Maggie Steed as a character based on the late Queen, Kevin Bishop as Italian dancer Flavio, Griff Rhys Jones  as neighbour Mr Parker and young Archie Yates, as seen in Jojo Rabbit, as the central character Ben.

Walliams says: ‘It is a thrill to revisit these characters in a brand new story. I hope families are going to love this comedy adventure story. A huge thank you to the BBC for making it happen.’

It is a sequel to the 2013 BBC One movie Gangsta Granny, pictured, which featured Miranda Hart as Linda, Rob Brydon as Mr Parker, Joanna Lumley as the Queen and Robbie Williams as Flavioli.

The hour-long adaptation will air on BBC One, CBBC and BBC iPlayer.

Patricia Hidalgo, the BBC’s director of children’s and education programmes said: ‘I can’t imagine a more perfect film for families to sit down and watch together. This adventurous tale will appeal to all generations, young and old.’

The BBC has previously adapted a number of Walliams’s other books including Mr Stink, The Boy In The Dress, Billionaire Boy, Grandpa’s Great Escape and The Midnight Gang.
