South Korean remake for Nick Helm comedy

Uncle, the comedy starring Nick Helm as a feckless musician who forms a bond with his 12-year-old nephew,  is to be remade for South Korea.

The show on the TV Chosun network is the first time the comedy has been remade. South Korean actor Jung-sae Oh will take the lead role.

Written by Oliver Refson and  Lilah Vandenburgh, the show ran for three seasons on BBC Three from 2014 to 2017.

The original was made by Steve Coogan’s  production company Baby Cow, but the South Korean version will be made by local firm Monster Union.

Andre Renaud, who sold the show through BBC Studios said: ‘The warm and honest exploration of family told in a fun and humorous way through the eyes of an uncle and nephew feels like the right story for viewers to be able to see in these complicated times.

‘South Korea continues to be a leader in sophisticated scripted adaptation and I’m excited to see how Uncle will come to life in the coming months.'

• Baby Cow has today announced that it has appointed its managing director, Sarah Monteith, as chief executive, following the departure of Christine Langan.
