Phoebe Waller-Bridge pays tribute at Critics' Chouce Awards

Phoebe Waller-Bridge has won so many awards must be running out of people to thank in her acceptance speeches.

So as she scooped two more gongs at the 2020 Critics' Choice Awards in Los Angeles last night, she found a new inspiration to credit: Jennifer Lopez.

Accepting the award for best comedy series for Fleabag,  she said: ‘This is a bit of a random shout-out. But you have no idea how you can accidentally inspire people just by doing your work, and somebody inspired this show in a way that you'll never know, and that's J-Lo!’

The star was in the audience to hear the credit, with Waller-Bridge explaining that it was one of Lopez’s biggest hits that helped her create the character of the ‘hot priest’, played by Andrew Scott.

‘I don't know where she is, but I decided that the Priest's favorite song was Jenny From The Block, and it opened the entire character up for me,’ Waller-Bridge said. ‘So, I don't know where she is, but that's really genuine, so thank you, thank you J-Lo.’

Waller-Bridge was also named best actress in a comedy series at the awards – with Scott scooping best supporting actor.

Bill Hader won best actor in a comedy series for Barry; Alex Borstein of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel won best supporting actress in the category.  

Best drama was won by Succession, the HBO series about a media mogul’s warring family created by Peep Show’s Jesse Armstrong.
