Third series for So Awkward
Children’s sitcom So Awkward has been renewed for a third series, before the second has even aired.
CBBC has ordered another 13 half-hour episodes of the show, which revolves around three socially awkward friends – Lily, Martha and Jas – who prefer geekier activities than parties and sleepovers.
It is made by Channel X North, the Salford arm of the comedy production company whose adult shows have included Shooting Stars, Detectorists and Hebburn.
Managing director Alan Marke said: ‘So Awkward came about when an opportunity arose to develop one of our adult comedy scripts into a children’s project. We’re thrilled that the series has been such a hit for CBBC
‘We wanted to create a smart comedy with quality writing and acting that doesn’t talk down to its audience and we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved.’
And director of programmes Jim Reid added: ‘Having spent the last 30 years specialising in comedy formats for adults it’s great that we can use our expertise to develop an award winning children’s sitcom.
‘Because children’s shows are ordered in blocks of 13 it means there is a lot more work to get your teeth into. The dynamic on So Awkward is much more like a US team writing show, which is different for us and exciting.’
The second 13-episode series was filmed last summer in Manchester and returns to CBBC this summer.
So Awkward was created by Julie Bower and stars Cleo Demetriou, Ameerah Falzon-Ojo and Sophia Dall’aglio It was produced by Sally Martin and commissioned by Cheryl Taylor at CBBC.
