• John Bishop’s kids don’t think he’s funny. ‘They just look at me as if to say, “What are you doing?”, he told reporters at the launch of his new Sky1 show Only Joking. ‘My eldest came up to me over Christmas and said, “Dad, I think you should use this bit of time off to rethink your material”. I couldn’t believe it.”’

• Barack Obama must have a lot on his plate... but he cleared time in his diary yesterday afternoon to watch a sitcom. He scheduled a private slot to watch the new show 1600 Penn, which is set in the White House, with some of its cast and crew. One of the show’s creators is former Obama speech writer Jon Lovett .

• Ricky Gervais is to be kicked out of the London office where he writes some of his hits, after the landlord sold it off for flats. The space is not the plush, white-washed Regency building seen in Life’s Too Short, but a room above an estate agent’s in Hampstead. However his downstairs neighbour admits: ‘He is very, very rarely there. He comes in and out now and again with Stephen Merchant and our Idiot Abroad [Karl Pilkington].’

• The characters in Friends have a total of 138 sexual partners, which Joey leading the field with 51... according to a man with far too much time on his hands who worked all this out.

• Sarah Millican says she’s getting her fair share of admirers now she’s on TV... although they tend to be slightly coy about the attraction. ‘I get people saying I’m “weirdly sexy”,’ she says. ‘Or: “You’re my secret crush.” Why secret?! Though it’s nice when blokes fancy me — it means they actually fancy a normal-looking woman. I look a similar shape to somebody you’d bump into in Asda.’

• ‘It’s a slippery slope when you start giving people what you think they want. You end up popular and wealthy and we wouldn’t want that.’ Harry Hill.

• Glee actress Jane Lynch says she has a bit of a crush on English funnyman Russell Brand, despite the fact that she is gay. ‘I kissed him full on the lips on Jay Leno's show,’ she says. ‘Of course he's out of his mind, but I think that might make things quite fun.’

• A newly discovered species of bee has been named in honour of Big Bang Theory. Biologist Andre Nemesio said he named the species of Brazilian orchid bee Euglossa bazinga in honor of 'the clever, funny, nerd character Sheldon Cooper’, who has the catchphrase Bazinga!
