A Mayall order business

Rik goes indie for his latest comedy

Rik Mayall has bypassed traditional broadcasters to release his latest comedy creation online.

The comic has recorded a six-part audio comedy – with a full cast – that is available only as a download or as an independent CD.

In the The Last Hurrah – which Mayall co-wrote – he plays a misanthropic, immoral snowman called Elton who quaffs sherry at a secretive and ancient London gentleman’s club.

Mayall said: ‘Writing Elton was a joy. He is such an unspeakable cu…character. Yet for all his terrible behaviour, and despite his knack for doing well out of wars and human catastrophes, Elton has a very British charm and elegance, he’s just gorgeous.

‘The Last Hurrah, to me, speaks so much about the feeling of a lost Britishness; a crumbling Empire, gloriously carrying on regardless in its secret self-contained world. I adore the fact that as a club member, Elton has knocked back drinks with Picasso, Beethoven, Wilde, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler, Hitler – all the greats.’

Rik Mayall also plays the sleazy narrator, psychotic entertainer Randy Hardy, and a character called Bastard.

The series was co-written by Dominic Vince and Craig Green, who said: ‘We are delighted with Rik's performance.

‘The character of Elton is huge and powerful and fits Rik like a glove. He and Dave Dutton, who plays Bonjour Hellfire in episodes 2 - 6,  have an excellent chemistry.’

The first episode has been released for free now, with the full series available as a download for £10. A triple CD is out tomorrow for £12 – all available from thelasthurrah.co.uk.
