Peter Kay launches a degree in comedy

New course at Salford Uni

Peter Kay has helped a university launch a new degree in comedy.

The comic joined John Thomson and Smug Roberts to launch the three-year BA in comedy practices at Salford University last week.

Kay started performing stand-up in the Nineties while he was studying for an HND in Media Performance at the university.

Twenty students on the £8,500-a-year course will be taught how to perform their own comedy material, learn drama techniques and write sitcom scripts.

It will also cover the roots of what makes people laugh, the business of a career in comedy and the cultural importance of the art form.

Course leader Lisa Moore, who has been a Salford lecturer for a decade, said she was 'astonished and delighted at the support received by industry professionals, and excited about the huge potential of the degree.'

Jason Manford also studied at Salford.
