When in Rome...

ITV commissions historical sitcom Plebs

ITV has commissioned a full series of the sitcom Plebs, which crosses the sensibilities of The Inbetweeners with ancient Rome.

The show stars Friday Night Dinner’s Tom Rosenthal as one of a group of desperate young suburban men who try to get laid, hold down jobs and climb the social ladder.

The six-part, single-camera written by Sam Leifer and Tom Basden.

Joel Fry and Ryan Sampson play the other friends, with Smack The Pony’s Doon Mackichan as their ruthless boss, Flavia.

It is the first original scripted comedy to be commissioned from ITV’s digital channels controller Angela Jain, and follows a pilot shot earlier this year.

She said: ‘From the moment I read the script and met the writers Sam and Tom, I felt if they could pull off the pilot we could be on to something very special.

‘The team have delivered the most wonderful, unique and funny pilot so it was a no-brainer to go to series. It has been a joy working with such a wealth of talent.’
