The grand prize...
The Funny’s Funny competition for female comedians has announced that its top prize will be £1,000 this year.
The money has been stumped up by London’s Soho Comedy Club, which is hosting some of the heats and the final.
Also in the prize package are a professional photoshoot from acclaimed portrait photographer Andy Hollingworth, and a website from FourToTheFour.com.
When the grassroots competition was set up last year – in response to the outrage that another competition for female comedians had begun to charge £15 to enter – Chortle underwrote the £500 top prize won by Harriet Kemsley.
So far, this year’s competition has attracted about 230 entries, with five more days before the closing deadline.
One of the organisers, Ashley Frieze, said: ‘Entrants so far range from first timers to acts who have been going for a number of years with hundreds of gigs under their belt. This is not a new act competition, but it is set up to enable acts of all levels of experience to flourish.’
