Matilda hits 10

Maximum nominations for Tim Minchin's musical

Tim Minchin's Matilda musical has scored ten nominations in the leading West End theatre awards, the Oliviers.

Based on Roald Dahl's novel, and with a book written by Dennis Kelly, Matilda has achieved the maximum possible number of nominations – including a coveted recognition for best new musical.

All four young actresses playing the lead role are nominated collectively for best actress in a musical. Meanwhile Bertie Carvel is has been shortlisted for best actor for his role as tyrant Miss Trunchbull and Paul Kaye for best supporting performance for playing Mr Wormwood.

One Man, Two Guvnors  and The Ladykillers, adapted by Graham Linehan from the classic Ealing movie, have also done well, with five nominations each.

Among their nods, James Corden is up for best actor for his role in One Man, Two Guvnors.

Winners will be announced at the Royal Opera House on Sunday April 15.
