Scottish star Stephen Robertson dies
Scottish comedy star Stephen Robertson has died in hospital in Aberdeen at the age of 78 following a short illness.
He was a member of the revue team Scotland The What, which first started performing in Aberdeen in the Fifties. They made their Edinburgh Fringe debut in 1969, and continued performing until 1995.
That same year, Robertson and his co-stars George Donald and William ‘Buff’ Hardie received MBEs in 1995.
Robertson was elected rector of Aberdeen University in 2009 and his term finished during the summer. A university spokesman said: ‘Steve will be remembered with great affection by students, staff and University Court members alike, for his enthusiasm, commitment and love for the university.’
When they launched their act, Scotland The What? described themselves as ‘three semi-literate Scots taking an irreverent look at their country's institutions’ and performed largely in the local dialect of North East Scotland known as the Doric.
