2m hunt for Tony Blair

Comic Strip makes a solid return

The Comic Strip’s return to Channel 4 attracted almost two million viewers on Friday night.

A total of 1.67m watched The Hunt for Tony Blair at 9pm, with an extra 279,600 watching it on +1 an hour later. The figures are slightly up on the slot average.

The cast for the spoof film noir – shot in black and white – included Stephen Mangan as the former prime minister, Jennifer Saunders as Margaret Thatcher and a show-stealing performance by Nigel Planer as Peter Mandelson.

The show was generally welcomed by critics, too, with The Guardian's Sam Wollaston saying 'I laughed more than I've ever laughed in a film by the Comic Strip' and The Independent concluding: 'Daft, angry and lovingly rendered, this was a political comedy like no other'.

Meanwhile, Sky1’s new sitcom Spy almost doubled the broadcaster’s normal audience for the 8.30pm slot. Just under half a million viewers watched Darren Boyd play an unwitting MI5 spook.

And Have I Got News For You continued its strong figures, launching its 42nd series with 4.4million viewers on BBC One.
