• An old Frank Skinner anecdote resurfaced this week about the time he was performing a show in Birmingham, where the name of the local newspaper grabbed his interest. ‘Why on earth would anybody call a newspaper the Smethwick Telephone?’ he asked the audience. Then came the reply from the audience: ‘Because it’s from Smethwick!’

• Former CNN host Larry King says of his new career as a stand-up ‘This isn’t brain surgery. But the 77-year-old does lnjoy it, saying: ‘When I go out on stage, it is orgasmic.’
