YouTube hails Gap Yah sketch

'Homegrown Comedy of the Year'

An online sketch about posh ‘gap yah’ students has been named one of the internet hits of the year.

The YouTube film, by from comedy group The Unexpected Items has been watched more than 2.6 million times this year – and now the website has named it Homegrown Comedy Hit of the Year

Anna Bateson, YouTube’s director of marketing said: ‘More than ever in 2010 YouTube was a hub of creativity, a hive of hilarity and the place for people to share their passions and entertain themselves online.’

The six performers behind Unexpected Items, made their debut at the Glastonbury and Edinburgh festivals this year, while one of them, Tom Williams, also co-wrote another of the year’s online sensations, Newport State Of Mind, which hit copyright problems.
