A bit disappointing, to be Frank

Sidebottom only makes No 66

The attempt to get Frank Sidebottom to No 1 in the charts has failed.

The cult comic’s double-A side of Guess Who’s Been On Match Of The Day and The Robbins Aren’t Bobbins only managed to get to No 66 in this week’s singles chart.

Organisers of the Twitter campaign to give him the posthumous honour said the showing was ‘a bit sad, but we caused a bit of a stir’.

And author Jon Ronson, who used to tour with Sidebottom’s creator Chris Sievey, added: ‘Chris would have liked 66!’

Fans previously raised more than £21,000 for Sievey’s funeral, after it was reported he faced a pauper’s burial after dying virtually penniless. Excess funds, as well as takings from the single will go to cancer charities.

Sievey had been undergoing treatment for cancer when he collapsed at his home in Hale on June 21. He died soon afterwards in hospital, at the age of 54.
