Voice of Labour – and the Queen

Izzard in The Simpsons

Eddie Izzard is to be the voice of the Labour Party – and the Queen.

Not only is the comedian appearing in a party election broadcast tonight, but he will also provide the voice of The Queen when she features in The Simpsons.

In the episode, called To Surveil With Love, Her Majesty gets hooked on watching footage from CCTV cameras installed all over Springfield. The show will air in the US next weekend, and on Sky1 in the UK in May.

Izzard has previously said of the show: ‘I’d love to be in it, but they never asked me, and I don’t want to push it. I think it’s because I’m a cult – rather than a mainstream – name.’

Meanwhile, Izzard has recorded a film called Brilliant Britain for the Labour party campaign, in which he says the Tories should not be trusted.

He said: ‘The Tories are going to hit us with lots of posters and adverts in this election. They can do this because they have got shedloads of money to spend on making themsleves look good.

And he suggested wealthy backers such as Lord Ashcroft donated money to the Conservatives so they could secure tax cuts and concessions for the wealthy few. ‘These people are still Thatcher’s children,’ he adds. ‘Be afraid, be very afraid...’

He also made reference to his recent marathon runs around the UK, when he said he found that ‘Britain is bloody brilliant’. He added: ‘I take great offence at the Tories slagging off Britain, saying it’s broken.’

Izzard has previously fronted Labour broadcasts in the 2005 general election and the 2009 European election.
