Now comics have their own 'job fair'

Corporate culture spreads...

Fears that the world of stand-up has become too ‘corporate’ will be fuelled by the news that the first job fair for comedians has been staged in America.

Around 25 budding comics attended the day-long session, organised on New York’s Staten Island by the National Association of Comedians. And the event is set to be the first of many.

‘In this challenging economy, we plan to hold additional job fairs throughout the country to help comedians find work,’ said the organisation’s founder, Ron Kaplowitz.

Acts had the chance to audition to such industry bookers as Suzy Yengo of Catch a Rising Star comedy clubs and Mike Dano, of booking agency Creative Entertainment. Rather than attend actual gigs, the ‘suits’ watched the acts go through five minutes of their act in a comedy club on a stormy weekend afternoon.

The National Association of Comedians offers insurance, marketing services and educational seminars for members who pay $89 (£60) a year. The organization claims: ‘Using the NAC logo on your business cards, marketing materials and web site can give you credibility and give your career a boost.’
