Colbert wins a Grammy
Satirist Stephen Colbert has won the Grammy award for the best comedy album of the last year.
The comic hosted last night’s music industry awards, but also came away with one of his own for his spoof album A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All!
On collecting his award, he said: ‘This is a Christmas album, so obviously I should thank Jesus Christ for having such a great birthday.’
And he asked his daughter Madeline, who was sitting in the audience at the Staples Center in Los Angeles: ‘Am I cool now?’
His desire to impress his daughter was a running joke of the night. Throughout his opening monologue, he kept whether he was cool, only for Madeline to shake her head. But when he won his award, she nodded.
Colbert also got laughs by pulling out an iPad at one point, and joking: ‘Jay-Z did you not get one of these in your gift bag. Am I cooler than you?
And again he asked Madeline: ‘Honey, does this make me look cool?’
Colbert’s Christmas album was made as a Comedy Central TV special featuring guest stars including Elvis Costello and Willie Nelson and released as a DVD and CD. And.
It triumphed in the comedy category ahead of Spinal Tap’s Back From The Dead; ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s Internet Leaks; Patton Oswalt’s My Weakness Is Strong; Kathy Griffin’s Suckin’ It For The Holidays and Geogre Lopez’s Tall, Dark & Chicano.
Russell Brand was among those partying at the Grammys, and at one point joked: "Grammys... I know why it's called that. That's how much coke you need to cope with it.’
