BBC pulls plug on planned second series

The BBC has pulled the plug on the second series of Mathew Horne and James Corden’s much- slated sketch show.

Pre-production work had already begun on the next BBC Three series – but channel chiefs have now put the plans on ice.

The Gavin & Stacey stars’ much-hyped first series attracted strong viewing figures earlier this year – with the first episode’s 817,000 audience the strongest performance for any comedy debut on the digital channel.

But it was hated by critics, who felt repeated gags about Corden’s belly and camp gay characters were ‘puerile’, ‘boorish’ and ‘excruciating’.

A BBC spokesman told Chortle: ‘After exploring making another series of Horne and Corden for BBC Three, it has been decided that this would not be feasible at present due to other commitments, so all plans have been put on hold.’

Gavin & Stacey is also due to come to an end after the current series.
