Puppet comedy for BBC Three
BBC Three has commissioned an adult puppet comedy described as 'Avenue Q meets Family Guy'.
We Are Mongrels is about a country fox in the city, where his friends include a sarcastic pigeon and sexy Afghan hound.
The pilot episode starred Rufus Jones from sketch group Dutch Elm Conservertoire, pictured, as the fox, with Lucy Montgomery, Katy Brand and Ruth Bratt among the supporting cast.
It is hoped they will return for the eight-part series, which is due to air next year.
The show was created by Adam Miller, who directed Katy Brand's Big Ass Show for ITV2, and will be written by Jon Brown, whose credits include Horne and Corden and Scallywagga.
Executive producer Stephen McCrumb told TV trade magazine Broadcast: ‘It has a lot of cut-aways and flashbacks and it’s fast-moving; more like an animation with puppets than a traditional sitcom. It gives you the licence to do things you can’t with live action. We pitched it as Avenue Q meets Family Guy.’
The BBC's head of in-house comedy Mark Freeland added: 'It’s like a feral Top Cat.'
