Mitchell named top comedy performer
David Mitchell has been named Britain’s best comedy performer at the Bafta TV Awards.
In accepting the award, he thanked his comedy partner Robert Webb, who was not nominated.
He said: 'Obviously I feel it's a bit unfair on him, but I am not pretending I am not glad it is this way around.'
However their sitcom Peep Show was beaten to the title of best sitcom by its Channel 4 stablemate The IT Crowd.
And the best comedy programme award went to BBC One’s Harry and Paul, which beat fellow nominees The Peter Serafinowicz Show, Star Stories and That Mitchell and Webb Look.
Paul Whitehouse, who has won four Baftas, congratulated Enfield, who had never won before. Enfield joked: ‘This time I made sure he was in the show so I might get at least a touch of it too.’
Meanwhile, Harry Hill was named best entertainment performer a for the second year in a row; bringing his total Bafta tally up to three. ‘I never thought I'd get three Baftas for a clip show. Ridiculous,’ he said.
Afterwards, he added: 'I happen to think there is onlt one way to find out who is really the best entertainer. And that is, of course, a fight.'
As previously revealed, Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French received the academy’s highest honour, the Bafta Fellowship. They became only second double-act to receive the prestigious honour, following Morecambe and Wise, who were given the award in 1999.
