Simpsons leads writing nominations

With 30 Rock close behind

The Simpsons and 30 Rock are leading the field in the shortlist for the Writers Guild of America broadcasting awards.

They have five and four nominations respectively, including best comedy. It is the first time The Simpsons has been up for that category, having scooped plenty of animation awards before.

Also in the running for best comedy are Entourage, Weeds and The Office.

The Simpsons got its other four nominations for the best animation episode, alongside two King of the Hill shows.

30 Rock was nominated three times for best episode of a comedy series, with installments of Ugly Betty, My Name Is Earl and The Office completing the line-up.

The WGA awards will given out in Los Angeles on February 7.
