Carr vs Maidstone

Backlash after comic slags off town

Alan Carr now has a fully-blown feud with the town of Maidstone in Kent, after branding it racist, sexist and homophobic.

The comic now faces a backlash after complaining audiences there worst he had ever faced.

Last week, Chortle reported how he complained of the town’s now-defunct Up The Creek: ‘They hated me. I never lasted more than seven minutes. It was full of homophobic narrow-minded morons.

‘And it wasn’t just me. If you were black or Asian, you got racist abuse. If you were a woman you got, “Show us your tits”.’

In the interview with Metro, he added: ‘I better be careful in case I’m doing a book signing there… but I suppose I’ll be all right as half the people in Maidstone can’t read.’

But Tory MP Anne Widdecombe, who represents the town, said: ‘He is talking complete rot.

‘We have very high standards of behaviour and beliefs in Maidstone and it is obvious from his comments that he fails to meet them.

‘How can we be so racist and sexist when the next Conservative candidate and likely MP Helen Grant is half black?’

Resident Michael Lerpiniere told the Kent Messenger: ‘A Maidstone joke isn’t funny if you’re from Maidstone. I certainly don’t think people here are racist — they’re pretty smart.’

And Kris Van Haften said: ‘You can’t generalise about a whole area. Perhaps it’s only the moronic types that go to see him.’

It’s not the first time Carr has heaped scorn on the town, In April last year he called it a ‘fucking shit heap’ – but that interview seemed to have escaped the attentions of the locals.

Then, he said: ‘I’ve never had a good show in Maidstone, it’s retarded. The first time I played there I had to get a taxi to my car because the audience wanted to beat me up.’
