30 Rock cleans up at Emmys

30 Rock has triumphed the American prime-time Emmy Awards, winning four accolades.

The show, set behind the scenes of a late-night comedy revue, was named best comedy series.

Stars Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey, took home the best acting honours while creator Fey also won the comedy writing award.

Only period mini-series John Adams, about the United States' second president, won more Emmys that 30 Rock, with a total of five on the night.

Jeremy Piven was named best supporting actor in a comedy for his role as Ari Gold in Entourage; while Jean Smart won best supporting actress for Samantha Who?

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart was named best comedy show (as opposed to narrative series), while the team behind its spin-off Colbert Report won the prize for best writing in the same category.

Stand-up Don Rickles won the award for best individual performance for his HBO special – at the age of 81
