The Glaswegian stand-up last night won the Nivea Funny Women Fringe Award for her Pleasance show Domestic Godley.

Award producer Lynn Parker said: ‘Janey Godley is quite simply one of the most prolific and extraordinary stand-up comedians working in the UK today, and represents the real spirit of the Fringe.’

Godley said: ‘Women who choose comedy as a career have significant challenges ahead. I am very happy to have won the award.’

Funny Women also named Scottish troupe Angry Puppy as best sketch show. The team comprises Leah MacRae, Susan Calman, Marj Hogarth and Kirstin McLean

And the best newcomer prize when to Pippa Evans, who recently competed in the final of Funny Women’s nationwide hunt for female talent, but was unplaced.

She said: ‘It's so wonderful there are Fringe opportunities just for lady comedy.'

Christina McKelvie MSP said the awards ‘recognise the part women’s humour and comedy has, and still does play in empowering women’.

Judges saw more than 60 Fringe shows, and nominated 20 of them.
