Sitcom star Hugh dies

Hancock reuglar was 85

Comedy character actor Hugh Lloyd, who was best known for his work with Tony Hancock, died yesterday at the age of 85.

The actor appeared in 25 episodes of Hancock’s Half Hour, including The Blood Donor, as well as his movie The Punch And Judy Man

He later appeared with Terry Scott in the series Hugh and I and The Gnomes of Dulwich. His other TV sitcom credits included You Rang M’Lord and Lord Tramp, which he also wrote.

Lloyd was born in Chester and worked as a local newspaper reporter for a time, where he would review theatre shows. He was still a critic when he made his first appearances on stage – and would happily review his own shows, in which he unsurprisingly gave himself glowing write-ups.

Lloyd began his career properly with the forces’ entertainment outfit ENSA during the Second World War, after which he went into repertory theatre until 1957.

He was inspired by Stan Laurel, and tended to underplay his characters in a similar way a style which suited TV better than the stage.

Lloyd, who was awarded an MBE in 2005 for his services to drama and charity, died at his home in Worthing, West Sussex. He leaves a wife, Sian.
