Coogan 'is the toast of Sundance'

Hamlet 2 sold for $10million

Steve Coogan has been hailed as the toast of the Sundance film festival, after his comedy Hamlet 2 received its world premiere.

The movie, a ‘politically incorrect’ spoof of inspirational schoolday films such as Dangerous Minds and Dead Poets Society, was immediately bought up for a reported $10million.

That figure would mean this was one of the biggest distribution deals signed at the acclaimed independent film festival.

In the film, Coogan plays Dana Marschz, a failed actor turned high school drama teacher who stages a musical sequel to Hamlet.

It has been described as ‘a twist on the formula of let's-put-on-a-show, with the twist being that no one wants the show’.

Catherine Keener co-stars as Coogan's unhappy wife, and Elisabeth Shue plays herself – the story being that she has given up on Hollywood and moved to Tucson, Arizona, to become a nurse.

Hamlet 2 has been written by South Park writer Pam Brady and Nancy Drew director Andrew Fleming, who also directs this film.
