Sitcom cuts 'offensive' scenes

Welsh show mocked the blind

Welsh channel S4C has axed scenes from comedy series Man Del after complaints that they mocked the blind.

The sitcom, whose name means Pretty Place, features a blind man with a disobedient guide dog which leads him astray.

In one scene aired last week, the character is led into a ladies’ public toilet where he ends up covered in faeces.

The scene attracted complaints – which led to this week’s show being re-edited to remove the offending character.

An S4C spokesperson said: ‘S4C takes every complaint seriously. Due to sensitivity regarding the portrayal of a disabled character, the comedy series Man Del has been reviewed.

‘It was decided that the portrayal was inconsistent with S4C’s aim to promote a positive image of people with disability on-screen.’

The show, set on a fictitious North Wales council estate, was written by Paul Branningan and the blind character was played by comedian Eilir Jones.
