Keitel to play Springer

Opera goes to New York at last

Harvey Keitel is to appear in a US stage version of Jerry Springer: The Opera.

The Pulp Fiction star will play the trashy TV host in a pared-down version of the controversial comedy musical written by Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee.

A full-scale Broadway version had been planned two years ago, but that fell through. The new version, called Jerry Springer: The Opera In Concert, will feature the singing and plot only, and feature abour 30 performers.

It takes place at Carnegie Hall, New York, on January 29 and 30.

Producers told The New York Times that if the concerts are successful they will consider reviving the plans for a full Broadway run.

Springer debuted at the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, before transferring to the National Theatre and the West End. Fundamentalist Christians, led by Stephen Green’s Christian Voice, tried to disrupt the national tour by protesting at theatres.
