A funny old place
And at the other extreme, Cardiff came bottom of the table of places most up for a laugh in the Reader's Digest study.
Researchers stopped 50 passers-by in each city, and challenged them to tell a joke, funny story or anything get a laugh. The result was a combination of the number of people who accepted the challenge, and how funny they were.
In Bristol, 72 per cent of the people were willing to try to get a laugh.
Birmingham came second while Liverpool, which always prides itself on its sense of humour, came third.
They were followed by London, Glasgow, Newcastle and Brighton, in that order.
One Bristolian said: ‘People make fun of it, like Little Britain does with Vicky Pollard, but that gives Bristolians a real sense of identity and makes us more inclined to laugh at ourselves.’
The funniest age groups, according to the study, were the under-20s and the over-70s, and men and women were equally funniy.
The poll also revealed a fondness for dirty jokes with at least half of the jokes covered risque topics.
