Alpine comedy festival launched

Marcus Brigstocke has launched a new comedy and music festival in the Alpine ski resort of Meribel.

The two-week festival, which will take place next April, in ‘as many venues as we can lay our hands on’, including Edinburgh’s Udderbelly marquee.

Announcing the festival last night, Brigstocke said: ‘It is the largest ski area in the world. We are taking out the Underbelly's purple cow and sticking it in the middle where all the ski-lifts start.’

Brigstocke, who is part-financing the venture, has run Taking the Piste comedy shows across the Alps for the past six years, and is inviting ‘hundreds’ of comics to the event.

Acts already announced include Ed Byrne, The Comedy Store Players, Jo Brand, We Are Klang and Phill Jupitus.

Brigstocke is also trying to recruit Bill Bailey and Eddie Izzard, and said: ‘The aim is to get French acts to do some of their acts in English, and English acts to do some of their gigs in French. ‘

The event takes place from April 5 to 20, 2008
