Cooper turns to bronze
Fans have spent four years raising the £40,000 needed to erect the bronze monument near the comic’s home town, and now sculptor James Done is just months from completion.
Tudor Jones, secretary of the Tommy Cooper Society, told the South Wales Echo: ‘We invited Sir Anthony to unveil the statue as he’s the patron of the society and was a big fan of Tommy.
‘We’ve since had a reply by e-mail to say he would be honoured to unveil the statue. It’s great news and very exciting for everyone involved.’
The statue will be put up opposite Caerphilly Castle.
A blue plaque to Cooper will also be placed in nearby Twyn Community Centre in the autumn, the Heritage Foundation charity has announced.
