Five buys Duchovny comedy

'It's witty, sexy and original'

Five has snapped up the UK rights to David Duchovny’s new comedy Californication.

The sitcom stars the X-Files hero as a troubled novelist, whose honesty and behaviour with drinks, drugs and relationships are both destroying and enriching his career.

Five bought the 12-episode series, which makes its US debut on cable network Showtime in August, for both its terrestrial channel and the digital Five US at this week’s LA Screenings.

Five acquisitions controller Vanessa Brookman, who brokered the deal with CBS Paramount International Television, said: ‘I'm delighted that Five has acquired the rights to what is easily one of the most distinctive pilots I've seen. Californication is witty, sexy and original.’

The show has already raised eyebrows in America because of its semi-nude bedroom scenes and bad language.

Five has been a major importer of US series – but its last big comedy signing, the Friends spin-off Joey, failed to match up to expectations.
