In good Standing

Brits make Last Comic Standing

British comedians Junior Simpson, Ava Vidal, Matt Kirshen and Spencer Brown are to take part in the hit American show Last Comic Standing this year.

The comedians all triumphed at the showcase gig at the London Comedy Store last night, following a day of open auditions.

Gina Yashere had previously got through from the Sydney heat, as she is currently touring Australia. Fiona O’Loughlin, a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe, also made it through that heat.

They will all be among 50 semi-finalists converging on Los Angeles in May for semi-finals. There, their number will be whittled down to 12 to enter the Fame Academy-style house to hone their skills.

The reality show competition, made by the NBC network, makes stars of its contestants across America, guaranteeing them bookings at clubs across the country – and possibly more.

Few people stood in line for the open auditions once doors opened at 9am, but more established comics arrived later in the day. The best 20 were invited back for the evening gig, from which the top four were invited to Hollywood.

The series – the fifth – will air on Paramount Comedy this summer, coinciding with the American broadcasts.
