Springer creator plans 'psychotic' ballet

Jerry Springer: The Opera creator Richard Thomas is to turn his hand to ballet.

The composer said he’s planning a ‘psychotic’ piece for the stage to bring some fun back to the art.

He told actors’ newspaper The Stage: ‘I’m working on the idea of a ballet which is a psychotic version of the musical A Chorus Line. It is a cross between Pop Idol and a cattle call.

‘I’m quite traditional when it comes to composing and the music, but I also like the sound of a crowd laughing. There’s no reason why opera and ballet have to be rigid in the way that they are presented - they can be fun.’

Thomas has just written five operas based on such popular TV programmes as The Apprentice, Wife Swap and Question Time. John Thomson, Hugh Dennis and Jon Culshaw are among the stars who will appear in Kombat Opera Presents... when it starts on BBC Two on Sunday.

Thomas renewed his collaboration with stand-up Stewart Lee for two of the episodes: Children of The Stones and Drinking In Nottingham
